Providence Gardening Network

SCLT's Community Gardens   Community Garden Network

The Greater-Providence Community Garden Network is a voluntary, community garden-led coalition. Launched by Southside Community Land Trust and community partners in 2009, the Network includes over 35 community gardens in Providence and Pawtucket - we see this as an exciting opportunity for gardens to work together to share resources, information, and experience.

Community gardening has become increasingly popular in recent years. Demand for guidance from experienced community gardeners is on the rise – residents from all over the city, and the surrounding region of Southern New England, are interested in acquiring land and building gardens to safely grow their own food. The Greater-Providence Community Garden Network encourages communication and shared resources between gardens, building a pool of “experts” to assist gardeners new and old, and providing a strong base of advocates in the city of Providence.

The Community Garden Network is truly growing an “edible city.” Here are just a few of our accomplishments from our first season. We…

·      Coordinated for the first distribution of high-quality, organic compost to over 30 community gardens, with generous support from the City of Providence.

·      Hosted the "Open Garden Day” and “Urban Agriculture Kick-Off,” which gathered over 350 urban gardeners to celebrate their work!

·      Donated over 1,600 vegetable seedlings from the City Farm Plant Sale to community and youth gardens all over the city

·      Hosted a free workshop series for folks new to food growing, including recent refugees new to the New England climate.

·      Served as the go-to resource for many of Providence's gardeners, lending a hand with everything from soil health and garden design to community organizing and legal aid.

Here’s a list of the community gardens in the Greater-Providence Community Garden Network, by neighborhood. New gardens are being planned all the time! If you hear of a community garden that isn’t on our list, please send a note to GardenNetwork@SouthsideCLT.org!
